ABOUT YOUR GUIDE

Meet Matt

Matt is a lifelong angler with decades of experience fishing river systems in both Australia and the United States. He brings a disciplined, tournament-honed approach to guiding, combining local knowledge with precise timing and decision-making to maximise opportunities on the water.

Having spent over six years fishing competitively for largemouth bass in the US, with more than 100 tournaments and multiple first-place finishes, Matt applies the same focus and preparation to every guided trip. After living in Sydney for over a decade and fishing the Hawkesbury catchment extensively, he knows these rivers intimately and fishes them with purpose.

Guiding Philosophy

At Three Rivers Fishing, every trip is built around conditions, not a fixed plan. The Hawkesbury catchment is a dynamic system, and success comes from understanding how tides, flows and seasonal patterns influence fish behaviour on the day.

Trips are planned with purpose. Launch times, river choice and techniques are all adjusted to suit what the system is doing, rather than forcing a schedule that looks convenient on paper. This flexible approach consistently produces better fishing and more meaningful time on the water.

Small groups are central to how trips are run. With a maximum of two anglers, there is more water covered, more casts made and greater opportunity to adapt as conditions change. It also allows for a relaxed pace and focused decision-making throughout the day.

Quality is prioritised over quantity. The goal is not to rush between spots or chase numbers, but to fish the right water at the right time. Reading water, timing movements and making small adjustments are what turn opportunities into fish.

Above all, guiding is about providing a well-run, professional experience. From preparation and safety through to decision-making on the river, every trip is approached with the same care and attention, ensuring clients can focus on fishing while everything else is taken care of.

Experience & Credentials

Matt’s approach to guiding is shaped by years of competitive bass fishing and extensive time spent on the Hawkesbury catchment. Competing in over 100 tournaments in the United States, including multiple first-place finishes, developed a disciplined approach to reading conditions and adapting quickly on the water.

After living in Sydney for more than a decade and fishing the Hawkesbury, Colo and Macdonald Rivers extensively, Matt combines local knowledge with competitive experience to deliver focused, purpose-built fishing days planned around tides and conditions.

Safety & Preparation

Safety and preparation are central to every trip. Conditions on tidal rivers can change quickly, and decisions are made conservatively to ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the water.

All trips are run with appropriate safety equipment, including life jackets, communication devices and first aid supplies. Weather and river conditions are assessed before and during each trip, with plans adjusted as needed.

From clear pre-trip communication to calm, considered decision-making on the water, every trip is approached professionally so clients can focus on fishing with confidence.

Sustainability & Ethics

The long-term health of the Hawkesbury catchment matters. All trips follow a responsible catch-and-release approach, with care taken in handling fish and minimising time out of the water.

Fishing pressure, conditions and seasonal patterns are always considered when planning trips. The goal is not just a good day on the water, but ensuring these rivers continue to fish well into the future.
